Executive director, Tamarind Global, Louis D’Souza speaks to Natalie Hami about India’s well-respected medical tourism sector, while outlining the ways in which the India-based destination and event management company assists with the logistics of a medical tourism trip.
TTG: Please tell me a bit about India’s medical tourism sector?
Medical Tourism in India is a developing concept whereby people from the world over visit India for their medical and relaxation needs. As health care costs are on the rise, patients in the developed world are looking for alternative options and safe medical treatment.
India is emerging as a viable choice, with its low costs, highly trained doctors and well equipped private hospitals, appealing to the most discerning of medical tourists.
Indeed, many patients are pleased at the prospect of combining their tummy tucks or hip replacements with a trip to the Taj Mahal.
India has some of the best hospitals and treatment centres in the world with the best facilities. Modern Indian hospitals bring together some of the most talented medical professionals, with the best of technology and an excellent working environment. They provide world-class healthcare facilities, with numerous super-specialties, state-of –the art operation theatres and the latest medical technologies and techniques. Dedicated teams ensure the highest standards of patient care.
The range of treatments are varied, from the simple to the ones that require super specialised treatment: Coronary Surgery, Cosmetic Surgery, Dental Care, Angioplasty, Hip Resurfacing Surgery, Knee Replacement Surgery, Gastric Bypass | LAP Band, Spinal Cord Surgery, Oncology, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Neurosurgery and Nuclear Medicine.
In India, getting medical treatment is not only quick but also costs a fraction of what it costs in the USA or Europe. Even tele-consultancy is available for expert opinion and transmission facilities. Since it is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, medicine has combined with tourism to make India a desired destination for medical tourism.

TTG: How is your business catering to Middle Eastern clientele?
We have always had a close association with the countries in the Arabian Gulf, and many of our regular, returning customers live in this part of the world. Not only local Emiratis, Saudi Arabians, Kuwaitis, Qataris, Omanis and Bahrainis visit India with us, but a large number of the prolific expatriate population do so too. Our business in the Middle East is largely a B2B model, and we have local outbound tour operators who have been partnering with us for decades.
We are regularly present at the Arabian Travel Market, and consider the Middle East as one of our important source markets.
